Manage Layers

From the SkylineGlobe Server Manager’s Layers page, you can manage your layers: edit their properties, set layer access, and delete them from the server.

Searching for Layers

  1. From the SkylineGlobe Server Manager menu, select Layers. The Layers page is displayed.
  2. In the Search field, type a search string or enter an attribute, condition, and value and click Search. The autosuggest feature suggests relevant options as you type. Click the required option. The Layers list is filtered based on your search criteria.

Editing Layer Properties

  1. From the SkylineGlobe Server Manager menu, select Layers. The Layers page is displayed.
  2. Right-click the row with the required layer, and select Properties. The Layer Properties panel is displayed.
  3. Edit the properties, including the following, as required:
    • Bounding Box - The coordinates of a fixed rectangular area within which the loaded feature or imagery layer area is bounded. The coordinates parameters are as follows:
      • Top Left X and Top Left Y: The coordinates of the top left corner of the required bounding box.
      • Bottom Right X and Bottom Right Y: The coordinates of the bottom right corner of the required bounding box.
    • Recommended Block Width - Recommended geographic block width of the stream requests that are sent from TerraExplorer to SkylineGlobe Server. Select the block width in meters or kilometers. This field can have a large impact on the performance of both the clients and SkylineGlobe Server. More about: Determining an Appropriate Block Width for Feature Layers >
    • Owner - For SG Upload data sources, this is the name of the user who published the layer while for all sources other than SG Upload data sources, this is the user who was assigned owner of this layer's data source. If you want to modify user properties, click View. Then modify the owner’s user properties as required, and click Save. More about: Adding users >
    • View/Edit Access - The view/edit permission level for this layer, i.e., the users that have been granted view/edit access. More about: Granting view/edit access >

  4. Click Save.

Granting View/Edit Access

Edit and view access can be set for each layer, to determine which users will have permission to access the layer: None, Only Me, My Group, Everyone, or Selected List (of groups, users, or sites). Users with valid view access for a layer can list, view and load the layer (opened from TerraExplorer Desktop, TerraExplorer Fusion, etc.). In addition to loading the layer, users with edit access can also perform layer transactions from TerraExplorer Pro and any WFS-T client. When setting default permissions for a layer, you have the option to grant access to a Selected List of groups, users, or sites.

To grant edit or view access to a layer:

  1. From the SkylineGlobe Server Manager menu, select Layers. The Layers page is displayed.
  2. Right-click the layer, and point to Set View Access / Set Edit Access, and select any of the following: None, Only Me, My Group, My Site, Everyone, Selected List. Use Ctrl-click or Shift-click to multi-select layers.
  3. If you want to grant access to selected groups, users, or sites, do the following:
    1. Select Selected List. The Selected List panel is displayed.
    2. Type @ to add a user or group. The autosuggest feature will suggest all relevant options. Click the required option. Repeat this step for each user or group you want to add.
    3. Type # to add a site. The autosuggest feature will suggest all relevant options. Click the required option. Repeat this step for each site you want to add.
    4. Click Add.

Deleting Layers

To delete a layer from SkylineGlobe Server:

  1. From the SkylineGlobe Server Manager menu, select Layers. The Layers page is displayed.
  2. Right-click the row with the layer to delete, and select Delete. Use Ctrl-click or Shift-click to multi-select layers. The Delete Layers panel is displayed with a note asking if you are sure you want to delete the layers.
  3. Click Delete to delete the layer. The selected layer is deleted from the server.

Using Layer Categories

Layer categories can be assigned to layers to organize them and make them easier to search. When layer categories are enabled, a category tree displays on the Layers page, by which layers can easily be filtered according to their assigned category. When a category in the category tree is selected, the layer list is filtered to only show layers in this category.

There are two predefined categories that cannot be renamed or deleted:

  • All – Contains all the layers from all the categories
  • Uncategorized – Contains all the layers that weren’t assigned to a category

Enabling the Category Mechanism

When the category mechanism is enabled, users opening the SkylineGlobe Layers dialog in Skyline applications can view category information and filter layers based on category using the category tree.  Enabling the category mechanism also makes previously-assigned category information available and allows new categories to be assigned to layers in SGS Manager.

To enable the layer categories mechanism:

  1. From the SkylineGlobe Server menu, select Settings. The Settings page is displayed.
  2. Click General. The General Settings panel is displayed.
  3. Switch on the Enable Categories Mechanism option.
  4. If you want the categories panel to be displayed also for non-logged in users when opening the SkylineGlobe Layers dialog in Skyline applications to load layers from SGS, switch on the Display Categories for Anonymous Users option.
  5. Click Save.

Setting a Layer's Category

A layer’s category can only be set if the categories mechanism was enabled for the site.

To set a layer’s category:

  1. From the SkylineGlobe Server Manager menu, select Layers. The Layers page is displayed.
  2. Right-click the layer, and select Set Category. To set a category for multiple layers, use Ctrl-click or Shift-click to multi-select the layers, and then right-click and select Set Category. The Set Category panel is displayed.
  3. Select a category and click Save.

Adding and Reordering Layer Categories

Only site administrators or super administrators can create new layer categories and reorganize the category tree.

To add or reorder a layer category:

  1. From the SkylineGlobe Server Manager menu, select Layers. The Layers page is displayed.
  2. Right-click any category (node) in the category tree to create a new sub-category under it, and select Add Category. Then type the name of the new category, and press ENTER.
  3. To reorder a category in the category tree, click and drag the category to the required position on the tree.
