Starting in TEF 8.5, when TEF detects that the integrated (on-board) GPU is active, it shows an alert icon in the Settings page.
Many computers have both an integrated GPU and a more powerful dedicated GPU (NVIDIA or AMD). By default, the operating system decides which GPU is used. If the integrated GPU is used, TEF’s performance may suffer, including low frame rates (FPS) and reduced responsiveness.
For the best performance, configure your operating system to use the dedicated GPU for your browser, if available.
On Windows 10/11
Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics (or Graphics settings).
Add your browser to the list:
Chrome:
C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exeEdge:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exeFirefox:
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe
Select the browser → Options → choose High performance → Save.
Restart the browser and reload TEF.
In most cases, setting the GPU preference through Windows Graphics settings is enough. If your computer has an NVIDIA or AMD graphics card and you still see low performance, you can also check the GPU settings in the manufacturer’s control panel:
NVIDIA: Open NVIDIA Control Panel → Manage 3D settings → Program Settings → select your browser → set to High-performance NVIDIA processor.
AMD: Open AMD Software: Adrenalin → Settings → Graphics → Switchable Graphics → set your browser to High Performance.
On macOS
Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) Macs have one built-in Apple GPU, which will always be used, so no changes needed. For Intel-based Macs with dual GPUs (Intel + AMD Radeon), do the following:
Open System Settings (or System Preferences) → Battery.
Find Automatic graphics switching.
Uncheck it to force the dedicated AMD GPU (higher performance, more power).
Check it to allow macOS to switch automatically (may use integrated GPU).
Restart your browser and reload TEF.
